About Us
Nestled in one of the upmarket suburbs of the West Rand in Johannesburg, you’ll find Lighthouse on the Horizon, a therapeutic community (TC) for the treatment of drug and alcohol abuse and addiction, that has been in existence for forty years.
It is here where broken people find healing and new hope for the future. Here they discover new meaning for their lives, and new purpose for their existence. Where they can put yesterday behind them, and focus on tomorrow.
The Lighthouse on the Horizon work on a therapeutic community system – where the residents make use of a hierarchical model. Treatment stages varies between increased levels of personal and social responsibilities in the house. Peer influence, mediated through a variety of group processes is used to help individuals learn and assimilate social norms and develop more effective social skills.
What makes Lighthouse on the Horizon different to other rehabilitation centres, is the fact the fact that our treatment approach principally makes use of the community, comprising treatment staff and those in recovery as key agents of change. This approach is often referred to as “community as method.” Therapeutic community members interact in structured and unstructured ways to influence attitudes, perceptions and behaviours associated with drug use.
Here at the Lighthouse on the Horizon, our ultimate goal is not only to enable an addict to live a life independent of drug taking or other self-destructive addictive behaviour. Our goal is also to enhance a positive lifestyle after the stay here with us. We help and assist members of the program to be able to cope with the stresses of everyday life, but also to change a negative self-concept into a positive one. Sometimes it is difficult to know what the right decisions in life are, and therefore we equip out members with the right tools to do so. Everybody deserves fulfilling and meaningful relationships with others, and to be able to enjoy life to the fullest. |
We view drug use and addiction as a disorder of the person as a whole, and understanding that addiction is a manifestation of the manifestation of the underlying symptoms of the problem. The nature of these problems can be physiological, psychological, emotional or interpersonal.
Our Creed
I am here because there is no refuge, finally, from myself. Until I confront myself in the eyes and the hearts of others, I am running. Until I suffer them to share my secrets, I have no safety from them. Afraid to be known , I can know neither myself nor any other, I will be alone. Where else but in my common ground, can I find such a mirror? Here, together, I can at last appear clearly to myself, not as the giant of my dreams, nor the dwarf of my fears, but as a person part of a whole, with my share in it's purpose. In this ground I can take root and grow, not alone anymore, as in death, but alive to myself and to others.
